A mentor is someone who helps you, out of the goodness of their heart

A mentor becomes a source of a trusted adviser for a less experienced person; while the relationship is more informal and long lasting the role is to be dependable, engaged, authentic, and tuned into the needs of the mentee

While each of us develops at our own pace, this type of influence can have many positive and lasting effects
It is expected that the mentee will lead the relationship, inviting the mentor into their own inner dialogue to assist in working through complex decisions, focused on the personal development of the mentee

Usually the mentor role is wider than that of a coach, they are approachable, available and may include opening doors, making connections and sharing experiences

In the broad sense, a mentor is someone who takes a special interest in helping the personal growth of another person that they see value to encourage the inherent talent or help with confidence building
One of the key roles of a mentor are that they give emotional and moral encouragement, give specific feedback on one's performance, aid in obtaining opportunities. They are good listeners, good observers, and good problem-solvers

In general, an effective mentoring relationship is characterized by mutual respect, trust, understanding, and empathy

Mentoring is very helpful to positive youth development.
Children with mentors are more confident and have fewer behavioral problems, they show increased belief in their abilities to succeed and feel less anxiety related to peer pressure.

Quote for us

“Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.”
― Plato
